This project aimed to design and print a glass design and corresponding packaging, using new technology and substrates.
I began by looking at the glasses I already had in my home. I noticed that most of them featured a simple design, with thick lines for readability and clarity. Since there was no design direction for this project, I was inspired by the goldfish my friend had recently bought as a pet.
I hand drew sketches and then developed my favorite design in Adobe Illustrator. I developed the packaging similarly, basing the concept on the goldfish design. I aimed for the box design to subtly hint at how packaging affects the oceanic environment by placing the plastic bag containing the goldfish in an open ocean. I used Adobe Photoshop to turn this into a tiff file and printed it on a screen. I used a Mimaki machine to print the stencil onto a screen and a LC-PA400E machine to print the stencil design onto the glasses. I used a Konica printer to print the package and a Mimaki plotter to cut and crease the box. I learned new technology and printing methods, consistent design principles, and how to precisely register designs.
